until he was discharged from the Navy in 1946 after which he joined the Navy Reserve in 1947.
John lived in Lakeside while he attended San Diego State College and graduated with his Bachelor Degree in 1950. He started teaching Science to students in the 8th grade in the Lakeside School District in the fall of 1950. John was called back into the Navy in the spring of 1951 because of the Korean War and was sent to the Corona Navy Hospital in Corona, CA. where he worked in the Laboratory. He was discharged in 1952, returned to Lakeside and taught 8th grade Science while being the Boys Counselor.
In the fall of 1956 Lakeside Farms School opened and John was appointed as the first Principal. He also served as Principal of the Lakeside Middle School and Lindo Park School, retiring in 1984. He later moved to Eureka, CA. where he served as a member of the Eureka School District Board of Trustees. He worked as a Master Gardner and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club. He later moved from Eureka to Borrego Springs, CA.
John died in Savannah, Tennesee on August 24, 2006. His daughter, Charmon and son Pete were with him at the time of his death. John loved working with children, enjoyed working in his garden and was an avid golfer.
John is survived by his wife Sharilyn of Borrego Springs, his sister Margaret Ward of Hutchinson, Kansas, his daughter Charmon Jones of Savannah, TN, his son Sam of Hunt Valley MD, his son John of Lakeside, his son Pete of Savannah, TN, his son Bill Clevenger of Campo, CA (Bill is John's nephew. Bill lived with the Westrick family while he was growing up and John always thought of him as a son), his step-son Erin Harrison of El Cajon and 12 grandchildren. John will be missed by his family and friends.

JERY NELSON

In September Lakeside lost one of its "boys." Jery Nelson passed on to better things in a hospital in Oregon. He was the most unique of us all.
Jerry went to Lakeside Grammar School and Grossmont High School. He and his mother Don lived on Julian Avenue in town with Aunt Lora and Uncle Ernest their parents. Both boys graduated for UCLA.
What a batch of cousins that went to school together: Edie Lou Swearengin (now gone) Elaine Swearengin Draper, Don and Jery Nelson, Bobby Condon and myself, Everyl Swearengin. I didn't have a chance to cause much trouble as Winnie Condon, Bob's mom, was the secretary, and my mom Vaughnie Swearengin taught third grade. Aunt Lora and Uncle Ernest lived across the street until they bought the property on Julian Avenue.
After Jery retired from teaching High School and lobster fishing, he and his family moved to Coquille, Oregon. They bought a farm and discovered bamboo. He had over a hundred varieties and knew each by its Latin name. He lived in his overalls and was the inveterate farmer with his garden and bamboo sales to people all over the world. We will miss him as will his wife Carol Lee and children and grandchildren.

great show on the "Trains" that came and went through Lakeside in the early years.
We had three visitors from out of State.  Those who came from afar where: Elaine (Swearengin) Draper from South Carolina; Carl Cooper from Georgia; and Gerry (Conrad) Crabb from the Florida Keys. "Thank you" all for making the effort to attend the 29th year luncheon. Mr. Cooper won a small prize for making the first reservation for Heritage Day activity.
The Belt Buckle was won by Karen (Kuhn) Stephens and the Quilt was won by Janis Shackelford. Congrats Ladies!
Many, many "Thank Yous" are needed to those who put a great day together for everyone to enjoy. Those persons are to numerous to name and we might forget someone, and we would feel so bad. "Thanks" again everyone.
Remember to save the day next year because the Society will be celebrating 30 years of getting together for fun and activity. Be the first to get your reservation.
October 2007 is the month . . . watch for the date.
