Old Highway 80's 80th Birthday
Betty McMillen

The Lakeside Historical Society took part in an important historic East County celebration on October 21st. Old Highway 80 was designated as an official "Historic Route." The San Diego Visitors Bureau - East planned the whole event to help improve the economy along the old highway.
The kickoff began at Sea Port Village with a ribbon cutting and classic car rally traveling the old route where there were new "Historic Route 80" sighs along the way.
The caravan stopped at the Historic Lafette Hotel on El Cajon Blvd. for a celebration, then head to La Mesa for a show and ribbon cutting. Afterwards they headed to downtown El Cajon.
The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce orchestrated a ribbon cutting ceremony for Lakeside's portion of Old Highway 80. Lakeside hosted a western theme celebration at Alpine "Rock and Block" (formerly Glenview Supply and Hardware) at the corner of Old Highway 80 and Los Coches Road. Owners Debbie and Russ hosted the event. They wore western costumes and were greeting all the guests. D.J. Jumpin' Jack Flash played oldie rock-and-roll music. The Monday night car club and others showed off their classic cars. A big helping of chili cooked up by the 67 Café was served to all the guests.
. Our Lakeside Historical society manned our booth where we sold our history books and t-shirts. Folks also purchased chances for our centennial belt buckle, and quilt which was made by the Lakeside Woman's Club.
After the celebration in Lakeside the rally headed to Alpine for another event. It all ended at Viegas Casino where they met up with a car rally which came from Yuma.
It was a fun and historic party for old Highway 80 which spans 2,500 miles from San Diego to Georgia. It was known as "the ocean to ocean highway."

LHS Archives
Elaine Brack

At this time we all need to "Thank" Marcella Williams for her many, many years of working on the Society Archives.  She has been such an asset to keeping the information correct and in the proper places. She can name people and their families and tell you where they live and numerous bits of information about each family.  "Thank You" again so much for all you have done over the years, Marcella. We still need your input and the recognition about many things.

We also want to say "Thank You" to Edna Kouns and the Claycomb family for adding more information to the Archives.  We are gathering more information every day and the Archive Committee will continue to share with everyone the new additions to the Archives. If you have anything you would like to share please come by the History Center we would love to see and talk to you.
