Well, by the time you read this the 30th Lakeside Heritage Day will have passed and now we are pressing on into the winter season focusing on Thanksgiving time and Christmas holidays. My mother once (probably more than once) said "the older you get the faster time goes by" and so true, so true. How come Mother’s are so smart? I want to thank all those who worked so hard to put on the Heritage Day Dinner here at the Old Church -- it was a great day -- and the Speedway Centennial in Lindo Park. Dixie Lansdowne and her Heritage Day Committee were wonderful, and the Centennial Speedway Committee was outstanding. Those two events were milestones for this organization and you all did a really great job. Say, did you get to meet John Gay? Yes, he was there in spirit, but also John F. Gay was there, a great-great nephew descendant, who came all the way from Louisiana for the event. Outside our organization, special appreciation goes to Barona Resort & Casino and San Diego County Parks and Recreation for their sponsorship and guidance in the event. Additionally, we give special thanks to the many other organizations in Lakeside for volunteering their services and cooperation: The Barona Band of Mission Indians, The Lakeside Chamber of Commerce, the River Park Conservancy, Moose Lodge #1731, El Capitan High School, El Cap Key Club, Lakeside Optimist, Monday Night Car Club, Lakeside Equipment Sales & Rental, Duane Dubbs Enterprises, Miss Lakeside Queen and court, San Diego Visitors’ Bureau East, California Highway Patrol and Santee Sheriff Volunteers, Carter Smith VFW, Lakeside Middle School PLAY, and Town & Country Printing. We couldn’t have done it without their help. Even though it is the end of October, 2007 will wind up fast and we are looking forward to a new administration of officers and projects to guide the Society starting January 2008. Please note that November 12th will be a special meeting date, not our usual 4th Monday, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. We usually have pot luck dinner to share the Thanksgiving friendship with members and, since it is Veterans Day, we will give a salute to remember our military boys. The main order of business for this meeting is to elect the new officers for the Lakeside Historical Society, so I hope you will be there. Also, Friday, November 30 will be the Sprit of Christmas in Lakeside, presented by the Lakeside Chamber of Commerce. Join the fun on Maine Avenue from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and watch the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and arrival of Santa in the patio of the Historical Society where we will have open house, with the Museum |
