Keeping Track Of Our Treasurers
Chris Herzog, Museum Curator
The society needs people to help with cataloguing artifacts. This involves identifying the item by measuring it, noting the condition, describing characteristics, the age, any identifying markings or inscriptions, intended use, content of material, documenting as much information as possible. Sometimes it's the story associated with the object, or the owner that makes the item interesting.
This job has advantages in that you get to see items up close before they are put on display, reminisce about the times, and learn the history. A lot can be accomplished within a few hours multiplied by a few people, on a few different days. And we have a good time, too.
The value of documenting these artifacts is in the teaching. How will our children and future generations ever know how to ask about people, events, social movements, or architecture from the past when the landscapes or structures and objects of daily living are no longer around to stimulate their interest? That is our mission of the Historical Society.
To learn about being a docent and other volunteer jobs at the Historical Society, plan to attend the May 27th Tea and Talk at the History Center, 3:00 PM, Saturday. What is a docent? It's another word for guide, teacher, or person sharing information about a subject. This will be informal, with refreshments, and an opportunity to see the facility and ask questions. Bring a friend as your docent partner.
May 20 is Armed Forces Day. The museum is presenting a display of the military items and clothing we have in collection. These items will be shown May 20th and 21st; and also May 27th and 28th in honor of Memorial Day. Please come between 11:00 and 3:00 PM.
