April 28th General Meeting
Barbara DeYoung
Our General Meeting on April 28th went splendidly. Patricia Daly-Lipe, the Author of La Jolla A Celebration of Its Past, was so enthusiastic about her subject that she had us all amazed! Her husband, Steele Lipe who edited her book, came along to encourage her for she had two talks scheduled that day . . . a long day for her but she rose to the occasion with gusto. It is beautiful now, but we can only imagine it unspoiled by traffic and congestion. A good read! Patricia had written several books and has a novel coming up this year.
That was not the end of the excitement. We had three new members attend! Three new warm bodies that will be coming back! Julie Tewalt and Heather Parker have already signed up for snacks next month, and Linda Hughes the month after. So, I think it a fine idea that a lot of us show up for the next couple of meetings to welcome them. And, to show them how much we appreciate them and their desire to jump right in and be part of us!
Many things are brewing . . . a lot of fun projects ahead. Many hands make the workload lighter and more enjoyable, so come join us!

More Plaques
Pat Ellwood, Historical Markers
At long last the plaque is up on the Town Hall. Due to one complication after another, the mounting was delayed two years.
A house on Parkside, built by J. Schiller in 1917, also has its plaque in place. Mr. Schiller built this house after his original home was washed out in the flood of 1916. That's the flood that produced a huge amount of rain when Mr. Hatfield made his "rain" contract with the City of San Diego. Mr. Schiller built on Parkside because it was on higher ground than his place on Willow Road, he said.
In 1910, a man named Ed Walker built a lovely house on Valle Vista on which we have now installed a plaque. Mr. Walker was a small farmer and dairyman. Lakeside remembers him as the man who gave the land where Lakeside Farms School stands.
Trish and Bud Hottell have been putting the plaques in place for the last couple of years. They have mounted them with vandal-proof bolts, which are a bit more trouble to install than regular ones. The Lakeside Historical Society has crossed its fingers and held its breath and so far . . . all of the plaques are still where they are supposed to be.
I'd like to take this opportunity on the behalf of the Society to thank Trish and Bud for their faithful efforts, they are very much appreciated. The Lakeside Historical Society is only successful because of people like them.
