Barona Bus Tour
Pat Ellwood

Tribal member, Beaver Curo, met us at the old church on the reservation and from there on provided us with a narrated tour. Of particular interest was the museum -- not dull as so many museums are--but interesting, informative and so well put together. As a former teacher, I was particularly interested in the school and the help provided for the learning of the Tribe's children.  The size of the fire station and its modern fire engines would do credit to many a small city.
After the bus tour it was on to a fabulous lunch (so many choices!) After that many of us played on the wonderful slots. (I won't tell you how many of us).
We thank the Barona Tribe, not only for a fun-filled trip but, for their generosity.

Historical Society News Brief
Betty McMillen

Last month, the Soroptimist Tri-Cities hosted their Woman of Distinction Award Ceremonies.  Organizations from Santee, El Cajon and Lakeside nominated women who had gone above and beyond the call of duty for the service of their community.  Our nominee for this award was Roberta Callaway Perry.  Roberta is our detail and database whiz.  She keeps all our records in order and helps us find things that seem to be missing.

Holiday Home Tour 2001
Pat Ellwood

In less than 6 months it will be time again for the LHS's Christmas Home Tour. It takes that long to find the homes, view them from the outside, obtain the owner's cooperation and permission, write up the advertising,
(and persuade the newspapers to print our efforts!) do the signs for the individual driveways, make the tickets and make a map on the back (thanks to Richard White for his computer aid and expertise,) round up entertainment and refreshments to be served at the Olde church for the enjoyment of those who go on the Home Tour. No wonder we allow ourselves so much time to organize!
Read the above again, please, and tell us if you find an area where you can loan us your talents. We can always use the help -- no matter how small. Please call Pat at 443-0931 or Betty at 443-1133 or leave a message at the Society's store, 561-1886. (1886 is the year Lakeside came into existence).  We will be pleased to have you.

Scholarship Award
Betty McMillen

The last three years the Historical Society has donated a $500.00 scholarship to a deserving senior student at El Capitan High School.  These funds are generated by our annual Golf Tournament.
Thanks to Bill Markle, June (Christoffersen) Bailey and Jerry Allen for working on the Scholarship Committee.  They interviewed six students who had requested the scholarship.  They chose Ginger Ruiz, who they felt needed help the most.  She is the first in her family to complete high school and continue her education.

Community Enhancement Grant
Betty McMillen

Recently Edna Kouns and Cindy Sullivan submitted a request for a grant from the County of San Diego.  Besides all the paperwork these gals worked on, Edna had to gather up all her courage and speak before the Board of Supervisors.  She asked for funds to help pay for the restoration of the manse front porch, plaques for historical buildings and some other restoration projects.  We will find out in a few months if we receive financial help.  Stay tuned.  Community Enhancement funds are generated by the tourist hotel taxes.

Golf Tourney News
Elaine Brack

On June 29, the Golf Tourney will be held at the Willowbrook Golf Course and will begin at 12:NOON.  At the conclusion, there will be a dinner provided by the Wrangler Bar-B-Que of El Cajon in the recreation room at the Willowbrook Mobil Home Park.
Everyone can come and enjoy the fun and great food by calling me to make a reservation at 443-0573 (reservations must be made by 6/21).  The cost for dinner is $6.00.
Also, you can still support the Society by making a donation for a hole or tee at $35; a golf cart at $20; or a table card for only $10.
All funds received will be going to the Scholarship Fund and the painting of the sanctuary area of our Olde Church.
Hope to see you there either as a golfer or dinner guest!

"Walk Of Fame"
Betty McMillen

Do you want to see your family name or business or memorial on a brick for the Historical Society's Walk of Fame?  We are selling bricks for $50.00 each.  Orders are rolling in so don't get left out.  After we get a certain amount of orders, we will get a load of bricks imprinted.  Cindy Sullivan is chairing this fundraiser.  Call her at 443-6045 for information and send your check to Historical Society 9906 Maine Avenue.
