PATRICIA ANN (KUHNER) INGALS, 70
Pat's family goes back to nearly the beginning of Lakeside Itself. Jacob and Pauline Kuhner moved to Lakeside from San Diego in 1881. Both Jacob and Pauline were first generation German immigrants. Their son William Jacob Kuhner married Helen Fischer of Alpine in 1903. Bill's son William Reginald "Reg" Kuhner was born August 29, 1906, and married Vivian Stone on October 5, 1927. Pat herself was born at home on Highway 67 one mile from the center of Lakeside on October 1, 1932 to Reg and Vivian. Pat served as Miss Lakeside while attending Grossmont. In late 1947, she met Verne Ingalls and in December of 1949 they were married.
Pat's first child, Kenneth Milton Ingalls was born on January 26, 1951. It was a difficult birth and it seemed unlikely that Pat would bear any more children. However on September 23, 1953, Vicki Jo was delivered. On October 5, 1955, Deirdre Lynn was born. Pat's last child, Kevin LaVerne, was born on August 17, 1961. Kenny left home in 1969, and Vicki in 1972. In December of that year Pat, Verne, DeeDee and Kevin moved to Sutherlin, Oregon. Pat spent what time she could in expanding her horizons, taking classes at Umpqua Community College.
On March 4, 1974, Pat's first grandchild, Michele, was born to her daughter Vicki. DeeDee left home for Lakeside on July 4, 1974. On March 4, 1977, Pat's second grandchild Mathew was born, again to Vicki. In August 1979, her last child left home for college.
Pat moved to Hawaii on a construction project around 1981. On July 28, 1983, Jeremy, Pat's third grandchild, was born to her daughter DeeDee. By 1984, Pat had returned to the mainland. A Maltese puppy named "TC" became her constant companion at this time.
Finally deciding that she was not seeing enough of her grandchildren, Pat returned to Lakeside to the very home in which she was born and raised. On November 4, 1989, Jeffrey, Pat's fourth grandchild, was born to DeeDee. On August 20, 1991 Pat's fifth grandchild Linnea, daughter of Kevin was born. On April 22, 1994 Pat's sixth grandchild Megan, daughter of Kevin was born, and her seventh and final grandchild Kendra, daughter of Kevin was born February 16, 2002.
Pat worked for Cooper Scafani Property Management up until her illness caused her to retire in September of 2002. December 2001, TC, her beloved Maltese of 18 years died. Pat was a longtime member of the Lakeside Historical Society.
In September of 2002, Pat was diagnosed with colon cancer. Although she didn't fully recover from the disease, she was able to avoid leaving unfinished business. She was able to say goodbye to her friends and family. She spent the last months of her life living with her daughter Vicki. Through her skill and love as a parent and a person, she has left her children well-equipped to take care of her family. Relaxed and content she died quietly

Her nursing career spanned over 30 years, mainly in the ER at El Cajon Valley and Kaiser Hospitals. Mary and her husband Allen were married in 1948 and raised their three daughters in Lakeside. Their retirement years were spent in El Cajon as well as traveling extensively in the West and the Pacific Northwest. Allen, a retired Marshal, passed away in 1997. Mary Anne was a longtime member of the Lakeside Historical Society.
Mary Anne will be greatly missed by her daughters and their husbands: Sheri and Greg Kelly, Sandy and John Fisher, Sue and Derrick Phillips. "Grandma Mary" cherished her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mary had a heart for her Lord and a loving smile and helping hand for anyone she ever met.
