old.  I have to slow down sometime!"  Go Girls! And congratulations . . . you've done something that the rest of us hope to do someday.

Many Thanks
From The Birthday Girls

Dear Lakeside Historical Society,

  I would like to thank all of those from the Lakeside Historical Society that made my 90th birthday celebration at the old Lakeside Church a most wonderful day, with old friends and family, which we will remember for a long time.  My sister, Eileen Carender, and I would like to extend our gratitude and once again our thanks.

Sincerly,
Lucille Landis

  I would like to thank all my family and friends for the wonderful birthday celebration.  Your presence and the many cards meant so much to me.  Thank you again.

Eileen Carender

  Thank you family and friends for your presence, your cards, phone calls and best wishes on my 90th birthday.  It was wonderful to see so many and really "Made My Day."

With Love.
Edna Swink Kouns

Edna Kouns, Eileen Carender, and Lucille Landis

  How would you like to spend your birthday . . . if you were turning 90 years old?    Edna (Swink) Kouns, Eileen (Kouns) Carender and her twin sister, Lucille (Kouns) Landis aren't about to let a little age get in their way of having fun.  These three gals are still fiesty and on the go so their families decided to throw them a party.
  Family members, Virginia Embry, Dixie Landsdown, Cassie Larson and Daylene Polich planned the event and served all the food too.  Over 200 people showed up to help them celebrate, even 94 year old Marguerite Sherman came to wish them well.
  Pastor Bob Menze from the Presbyterian Church attended and said that the celebration actually started earlier at the church service when the whole congregation wished them Happy Birthday.  Later at the Olde Community Church the big celebration took place with over 200 people attending.  Eileen and Lucille's doctor, Michael Keller, showed up and he even played his accordion for everyone's enjoyment.  Folks from out of state came too, Eileen's son, Cecil, came from Kansas, Wes and Donna Swink,  John  and Val Swink came from Montana and Cathy and Jeff Foster came all the way from Alaska.  Supervisor Dianne Jacob, had honored the birthday gals with a Certificate of Recognition.
  Edna, Eileen and Lucille were born and raised in Lakeside and have been friends their whole lives. Eileen and Lucille were raised at Tom Thumb Ranch (where El Capitan High School is today).  Edna was born in Foster (where San Vicente Reservoir is today).  They have lots of interesting stories to tell about the history of Lakeside, such as being flooded out and loosing their homes during the 1916 Hatfield "the Rainmaker" flood.  Also they helped plant the little trees that line Maine Avenue in front of the Olde Church.
  These gals are still very active in the Historical Society, Woman's Club and Presbyterian Church.  Once I heard Eileen say that she is going to quit going to the Padre games.  I ask why?  She said "Well, I'm almost 90 years

"What Is A Grandmother?"
Anna Stephenson, LHS Member

  Grandmothers come in all
shapes and sizes;
Not easily recognized in
today's society.
Gramma's are endowed
with a certain propriety.
Some wearing aprons or
various hats;
Maintaining strong ties via letters
and long distance chats.
Though their image may not always
be as it seems . . .
Some are fast paced and others
of a lesser degree.
Employed, retired, non related or such;
Whatever their calling - Grandmothers
can never be loved too much!
