Historic Lakeside Inn's Potting Shed
Dixie Carender Lansdawne
The Lakeside Inn was built in 1887 and was a wonderful structure and a famous resort. The Inn had 400 acres of farm land producing fresh produce for the guests of the resort. These gardens were where Los Coches valley is, south from where the Inn once stood.
About 30 years ago former Lakeside resident Norman Lepker rescued its old patting shed from destruction. He found it on site on the former grounds of the old Inn. It was moved to his property on Valle Vista Road where it has been ever since. When Norm found it, it had been used as a residence and television repair shop.
The Move is On
Early in the morning of Saturday November 18, 2006 our ramrod Phil Claussens has his crew ready to go at 7:00 AM. Everyone met at the Lepker's property to begin the shed's move to its new temporary home. Phil had his truck and crane and Ben Carroll had his truck and trailer ready. The potting shed was sturdy for being over 100 yrs old, and it was very heavy. Ken and Mike had braced in up earlier for the ride down the road.
The guys worked all day getting the shed off its piers and onto the trailer. It wasn't easy because they had to work in a small area. Dustin, Nathan, Gary, Ken and Ben had to put a lot of muscle to it because it did not want to budge at first. All the while Brice Swaim sat on lap of the roof securely. As the men worked hard they had to do a lot problem solving as they went along. Sometimes I couldn't watch and just walked away thinking, "Boy, I am glad I am not doing this."
Finally the little shed was on the trailer ready to go. Ben had to back down a long driveway out on to the street. Once there, we were ready to mosey on down the road to our destination, "Rods Ranch." Gary took the lead with lights-a-flashing, followed by Ben-a-flashing, then followed by Phil-a-flashing. Dang! I'm turning my flashers on too!
We had a real convoy going on. They were almost done and it was close to 3:30. When we got to the ranch, Phil and Ben had the shed off the trailer and up on jacks in no time at all. Whew . . . it was done! The next day Tracy and Darren McMillen with friend Eric Crane lowered it to new piers.
There was only one window in the shed that had glass in it. When the move was completed, the glass was still intact, unbroken. Good job guys!
