MARY MITCHELL BIGGS, 97


  Mary died December 8, 2001 in Oregon where she had

lived for many yeas.  Mary and her first husband, Allen Mitchell, resided in a home on Woodside across from Cecil's Restaurant.  This home has been preserved. They built the "Mitchell Courts" on River St. in 1936 and these buildings remain the same and are a part of the Historic District.  In the 1940's during the war years, they moved in an old school building on Woodside next to their home, remodeled it and it became the Kiwanis Hall.
  Both were very active in Lakeside's early years.  Mary was one of the early members and supporters of the Lakeside Women's Club.  She was also an advisor of the Jr. Women's Club and president of the Lakeside Kiwanniens Club.
  They had one son, Ormand, who lived in Virginia and died there three weeks before his mother's death.  Besides her husband Doug, a daughter Carol, and seven grandchildren survive her.
  A memorial service was held for Mary on January 22, 2002 in Oregon.  It was conducted by the Eastern Star.


DONALD WILLIS CLEVENGER, 79


  Donald was born in the house his father built on the corner of River Street and Lakeshore Drive in Lakeside, California on December 12, 1921.  The living room had not been completed the night he was born.  His father nailed blankets on the door between the dining room and living room to keep out the cold.  The house was heated with a wood burning stove.  Donald's nephew, Max Clevenger, and his family currently live in the house.
  When Donald was born he joined his Father and Mother Leslie and Fay Clevenger and four-year-old sister Freda.  Two years later his brother Richard was born and 2 1/2 years later his sister Claire arrived.  Donald attended Lakeside Elementary School and Grossmont High School.  During his Grossmont years, Donald excelled in throwing the shot put.  He was called "Swede" by many of his high school pals. When not in school he helped his Dad in the family business, which was named The El Monte Service Station and located on the corner of Woodside Avenue and Los Coches Road.

  After graduating from Grossmont, Donald joined the Civilian Conservation Corps.  He was stationed at a camp in the Laguna Mountains.  He served in the United States Navy from 1940 until 1962, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.  He worked at National Steel Shipyard.  He became the "Friendly Postman" when he delivered mail while working at the Lakeside Post Office.

  Donald married Betty Otti -- affectionately called "Babel' by family and friends. They had one son William Leslie Clevenger.
Later Donald married Dorothy Larson, and to friends and relatives they became known as Don and Dot.
  During his retirement years, Don enjoyed his morning walks around Lindo Lake and visiting with friends he met along the way.

Don and Dot attended many Navy Ship Reunions in various cities in the United States and traveled in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
  Donald was a member of the Lakeside Historical Society, the Lakeside V. F. W., and Elks Lodge 1812.
  Don was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2001.  He spent the last sixteen months of his life living in Campo, lovingly cared for by his son Bill and daughter-in-law Cathy.  He died on December 11, 2001, the day before his 80th birthday.
  He is survived by his son William Clevenger, daughter-in-law Cathy, brother Richard Clevenger, sister Claire Westrick, six nephews and one niece.
  It was Donald's request his body be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea by the Navy 
  For you Don only clear skies and smooth sailing from now on.  We will miss your never ending sea stories, "gift for gab" and infectious grin.

MARYBETH LANGWORTHY KALSTROM, 83

  Marybeth was born in Calexice, California on February 12, 1918 and died peacefully in Fresno, California on November 15, 2001.  She moved to Lakeside with her parents in 1933.  She graduated from Grossmont High School in 1935, and from San Diego Mercy College of Nursing in 1939.  She then married James Kalstrom, from a local pioneer family, and moved to Fresno.  They were both members of the Lakeside Historical Society since 1987.  She was preceded in death by he husband of 62 years.
  Her daughter Kathleen writes: "To fulfill her final wishes, my brothers and I were able to scatter her ashes at sea.  It was a beautiful sunny day  a beautiful way to say our final good-byes.  A celebration of her life was held November 23, 2001 at Fresno Masonic Temple.
  Survivors include her daughter Kathleen Kalstrom Callahan; two sons, David and Philip Kalstrom; eight grand children; and four great grandchildren.


DOROTHY FOSTER LYONS, 89


  Dorothy was born in Ramona on January 30, 1912.  She passed away December 14, 2001 in Lakeside.  She came to Lakeside in 1914 with her parents, older brother and sister to settle in El Monte Valley.  She attended local grammar schools.  After graduating from Grossmont High School, she attended Arizona State Teacher's College in Flagstaff.  She taught 2 1/2 years before marrying Robert Lyons then moved back to Lakeside in 1940 where her two daughters were born.  Dorothy taught 24 years in the Lakeside School District before retiring in 1974.
  She was very active in the Presbyterian Community Church and the Lakeside Women's Club.  In 1980, when the Lakeside Historical Society established the Life Membership program, Dorothy received the #3 Life Membership Card.  She was a faithful supporter -- always.
  A memorial service was held at the Olde Community
