37th Annual Congress Of History
History Conference
The theme this year will be From the Pacific to Palomar: A History of Northern San Diego County. Speakers will cover a wide range of topics. Among the many topics scheduled to be presented are: "Leo Carillo and Los Kiotes," by Alan and Joan Kindle of the Friends of Carillo Ranch; "The California Conservation Corps at Palomar Mountain," by Alex Bevil, historian at the California Parks and Recreation Department; "History of Surfing in Southern California." by Rich Watkins of the California Surfing Museum; "California Native Landscaping," by Greg Bevin of California's Own Native Landscaping; "The History of River Valley Park," by Jean Panella of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy; "The Origin of the Salton Sea," by Carol Hann of Imperial County College; and "Camp Pendleton: 1941-1991," by Faye Jonason of the History and Museums Sector of Camp Pendleton.
Other speakers include: Dr. Tim Dong, president of Mira Mesa College, who will speak on the history of the Asian community in North County; Dennis Gallegos of Gallegos and Associates, who will discuss archaeology in San Diego County; Lucy Berk of the Escondido Historical Society, whose talk is on "A Historical Survey of Escondido Historical Buildings;" Don Jones of the Vista Irrigation District, whose topic is "Water Comes to Vista;" and Shari Fortmueller and Ranger Jake Enriquez, who will discuss the present status of local historical ranchos.
