Heritage Day Wrap-Up
Elaine Brack

Many, many thanks to all those who volunteered to help put together Heritage Day in October.  We canceled the event at the Community Center due to the Cedar Fire, which burned through parts of Lakeside on this day, October 26, 2003.  A sign was posted that morning informing everyone that we had moved to the Olde Community Church for coffee and donuts.  Most of those who ventured out that terrible day were:

Andy Anderson and neighbor
Jean Bailey
Chuck and Elaine Brack
Gertrude Davis
Pat Ellwood
Edna Kouns
Betty McMillen
Mary Neal
Olga Puhn
Regis and Sheila Rosner
Richard White
Ray and Barbara Whitlock
Russ and Amelia Wilkenson

That day we received numerous telephone inquiries about the luncheon and if we were rescheduling the Heritage Day event.  The decision was made to postpone until October 24, 2004.  So, mark your calendars and save this date.

Old Brass Chandelier
Pat Ellwood

Hanging in the hall of the Olde Church is a lovely, old, brass chandelier containing beautiful ruby-glass globes.
The chandelier came into the possession of the Lakeside Historical Society in October of 1989 when we bought it from the Church of the Aquarius which was then located on the corner of Pino Road and Julian Avenue here in Lakeside.
It took LHS members Ray and Barbara Whitlock somewhere around thirty hours to clean off the years of dirt and smoke which had accumulated.  Ray and Barbara then took the chandelier to Ramona where it was converted to electricity from oil. It was then installed in the hall of the Olde Church and has drawn the eye every time the lights are turned on.
Formerly, the chandelier had hung in the Church of the Aquarius for many years according to the former minister, Rev. G. Ernestine Paine. Rev. Paine has since moved to Pacific Grove, California, but very kindly answered my letter of inquiry.  The Rev. Paine told me that her church bought the chandelier at the estate sale of a well-known San Diego man whose name she cannot remember. She will write to us again if she remembers any more details.

Do You Have Information?

Hello,

I was wondering if you might have any history on part of my family that resided in the Lakeside area around the turn of century.
My great Grandfather, Robert C. Palmer worked on the Cuyamaca Railroad around 1893.  I have a photo of him standing near the train taken in 1893.
My Great Great Grandmother, Orena Waterman Rowe was the cousin of Governor Waterman and she lived in the area about that time too.
Would you have any information on their life in that area?
