The San Diego River and location of the new San Diego River Park in Lakeside

River Park Grand Opening
Betty McMillen

The San Diego River Park - Lakeside Conservancy invites you to attend their "Start of the River Park" celebration on Saturday, May 3, 2003.  The event will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 PM and everyone is invited to come to witness the ribbon cutting of the Public Art Feature on the Hanson Aggregate property (which they have donated toward the River Park).
Supervisor, Dianne Jacob, will be attending to talk about the River Park Project.  Other guest speakers will be Michael Beck, Chairman and founder of the Conservancy.  World famous artist James Hubbell, who designed the Public Art Feature, will be there to tell you about his work as well.  There will be food and entertainment too.  Come on by the Channel Road/Lakeside Avenue location and join us for the celebration of the new Lakeside River Park.  For further information, call the Conservancy office at 443-4770.

New Lakeside Museum
Museum Committee

The Lakeside Historical Society is in the beginning stages of opening a new Lakeside Museum.  It will be created in the Manse (formerly the Chamber of Commerce Office), which is the cottage right next door to the History Center and Olde Community Church on Parkside Street - just off Maine Avenue.  Chris Herzog is chairman of the committee and they already have a work plan started.  This committee is asking for your help, either financially, to catalogue the items on hand, or to help get the building ready for occupation.  The Garden Club has volunteered to install an old fashion garden.  Our museum in Lindo Lake Park has been difficult to have open, so we are hoping that we can attract more groups and tourists by having this new one next door to our church building.  If you would like to help in some way, please call Chris at 561-0372 or the History Center office at 561-1886.  We are accepting donations of all kinds and will be having fundraisers for the new museum.

LHS Library
D. Jean Rosenberger

The Lakeside Historical Society has a library of books, most of which have been donated from the estates of members, or their families.  These books include novels (such as Little Men by Louisa May Alcott, and The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott) and various historical books (such as A History of the San Diego Gas and Electric Company, and The Journal of San Diego History: 1977 - 1990).  Various works are also included, like Tension's Poetical Works, El Capitan High School Illusions, Street Walking in San Diego County, and The Poetical Works of James Russell Lowell.  Many other books such as New School Arithmetic Book 2 are also part of our eclectic collection.  Many of these books have been prepared for check-out from the LHS Library.

Community Forum on Crime

The Sheriff Department will be hosting a Community Forum on Friday, April 25 at 6:30 PM.  Everyone in the community is invited to attend.  The Crime Prevention team will be telling us about what they are doing for the safety of our community.  And, this will be the place for you to voice you concerns about what is going on in your neighborhood.    Besides the Crime Prevention Specialists, there will be other community organizations on hand to show and tell about their groups.  The event will be held at the Lakeside Community Center, 9941 Vine Street, next to the library.  Tell all your friends to come too.
