Lakeside Historical Society

A Celebration of Life: Dolores Meyer, 87

reception at the Town and County Club. Not long afterwards they became the proud grandparents of two little girls. Dolores and Al were married for 33 years.
Dolores became interested in the Lakeside Planning of SNAP, which was to create recreation programs for the citizens of Lakeside. She also joined the Lakeside Historical Society and served as Vice President and President for two years. She formed a new Junior Historical Society organization. When the Historical Society moved into the Olde Community Church, Dolores was in the middle of the restoration projects from scraping and sanding peeling paint to painting whatever needed sprucing up. For her, it was a labor of love.
During this time she also worked for two years compiling information for the Legends of Lakeside history book which was published for Lakeside's Centennial. She also served on the committee to create a museum within Lindo Lake Park.
Dolores also worked in the kitchen, planning, cooking and serving food for the volunteers and workers. She was so good at the job that she soon became the "ways and means chairperson"  It was her job to think of ways to raise money for the Historical Society. This often meant cooking for large crowds at fundraisers. She even chaired the Society's very first "Christmas Home Tour." She found the homes for the tour, wrote the publicity, made posters and even served the refreshments. A tradition was established and the Society hosted it's 16th annual Holiday Home Tour last December.
Dolores was also active in the Woman's Club of Lakeside and served as Secretary and Vice President. She also worked with the Chamber of Commerce to promote and organize the annual Western Days Celebration, and was an active member of AARP, Congress of History and Area on Aging.
In 1985 Dolores received the "Woman of The Year", "Woman of Distinction" and "Citizen of the Year" awards.  The Daily Californian newspaper named her as Citizen of the Year because of the devotion she had shown to her community over the years.
She took on the chairmanship of the Lakeside Centennial Committee for the Historical Society in 1986. This group planned for a year of celebrations for the community's 100 birthday. She encouraged businesses and organizations to participate in the various celebrations, which included a large event once a month for a whole year. The grand finale was having the fireworks on the Fourth of July in Lindo Lake Park.
Besides their volunteer work Dolores and Al enjoyed traveling in their motor home and went all over the USA to family reunions.
She was a charter member of the new LCSA (the Lakeside Community Service Association) which was formed to promote recreation programs in Lakeside and work toward having a Community Center built in Lindo
