In Loving Memory

CLYDE BAXTER ATKINSON, 91

Clyde Baxter Atkinson, was born on March 26, 1915 in Alamogordo, NM to David R. and May E. Atkinson.
The youngest of seven children, he was the apple of his mother's eye. He along with his older brother, Hugh, were her second family, she used to say because they were several years younger than all of her other five children.
They lived in Alamogordo until Clyde turned seven. Then his family took a small herd of cattle to the Ranch in the Peloncilla Mountains, 20 miles south of Animas NM. In the fall of 1923, part of the family came to Lakeside to visit their Aunt Niss. In the spring of 1924, the family moved to Rodeo, NM so Clyde and Hugh could go to school -- moving back to the Ranch every summer to take care of the cattle.
In the fall of 1928, they moved to Lordsburg, NM where Clyde went to high school -- still going back to the Ranch every summer. After graduating in 1933, Clyde worked on several other farms and ranches until 1941, always going back to the Ranch to help with the cattle. In 1941, he moved to Lakeside to live with his cousin Myrtle Goodman and worked with Harvey Goodman. He also drove dump trucks for Hazard Construction while they were building the San Vicente Dam in Lakeside.
On October 18, 1942, Clyde entered the Army Air Corps and left Lakeside. He spent the next 2 ½ years training on 10 different military bases. He learned to fly troop gliders after he got too old for fighter planes. After the war, he returned to Lakeside but not before a stop at the Ranch to help his Mother.
During the 56 years Clyde lived in Lakeside, he built two houses, met and married Martha Conley, and raised three children, David, Michael, and Cindy. Clyde and Martha were married on June 22, 1956 and within three years the kids filled the rooms of their first house, the house on the hill.
After retirement from Naval Air Station North Island in 1971, he and Martha lived the good life, traveling to all 50 States, Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. Their travels stopped when Martha got ill in 1998. He was by her side until she passed away in February 2001. Clyde then had his daughter Cindy by his side to travel with him through the last five years of his life. They took several trips to New Mexico visiting family and friends along the way. Clyde's last trip to New Mexico was for his brother's funeral in February 2006. Clyde, the last of the Atkinson boys, took his final breath on June 15, 2006.
He is survived by, his three children, Clyde David (Gwen), Hugh Michael (Sharon), and Cynthia Ann; two grandchildren, Shelly Atkinson and Dawn Porter and one great granddaughter, Nichole Noche.
