Lakeside Historical Society

The Brickyard

Pat Ellwood

The Brickyard, of course, refers to the memorial bricks you have donated and your historical society has placed just to the left of the entrance to our store. Not only does this create a memory of those you love, but it also provides funds for us to carry on our constant efforts to keep a record of Lakeside's history. The bricks can not only record a memory of favorite people, but it's a good way to have a record of your own, living, family. The funds raised are constantly used to preserve and protect Lakeside's history. The bricks are $50.00 each and when we acquire a sufficient number of orders we order the bricks and then place them for you to see.
We have another fundraiser planned for this fall. It will be a Bar-B-Que. family dinner. Why wait for fall? Why not buy a brick to record your "people" memories right now?
Please contact the Lakeside Historical Society at 561-1886 or drop in to our store behind the Olde Church on Maine and Parkside. Our need for funds and a memory recorded for you can be accomplished in only a few minutes.

Peacock Hill
Betty McMillen

Does anyone know about an old ranch house on Olde Highway 80 called Peacock Hill.  It is located next to Gaetano's Italian Restaurant and across the road from Wood Art Village (Ben Montejo's place).  The former owner, Edna Martin, had a mobile home park called Lakeside View Estates next to the home.  She lived mostly in El Centro but spent time in Lakeside as well.  She had a lot of live peacocks and had one painted on a large boulder facing Olde Hwy 80.
The property may have been owned by Doc Odom at one time since he owned a lot of and in the area.
Pat Jones (one of the Jones Girls of the Jones Disposal business) said that during the 1960s her Mom, Vivian and Earl Jones and sisters lived there.
A developer has purchased the land and wants to build apartments, the old house is threatened with demolition if we can't save it.  The County has asked for our help in discovering the history of the house and garage.  If you have any information about the property, please call Preservation Committee member Betty McMillen at 443-1133.

  Many Thanks To
The Lakeside Garden Club
Anita Padilla

Thank you Lakeside Garden Club for your generous $250.00 donation for garden rejuvenation. President Yrene Woods and members recognize the importance of maintaining the gardens of our prominent historical location.
The Garden Club's main fundraiser is their semi-annual plant sale in May and October. Members are always scrambling for one and five-gallon containers so if you have any pots cluttering up your yard, they would be happy to have them. Pots can be left behind our museum anytime.
There is room in the garden to accommodate more roses. If you are interested in donating a memorial rosebush, please call Nita at 390-0075.

Old Timers Picnic August 3rd

We're all invited to an old time picnic in Descanso on Wednesday, August 3. Joanie and Harry Buckel (formerly of Rocky Home Dairy) have invited us to come up to see their ranch and have a BBQ dinner with them.
Harry says that we can bring our own meat (steak, chicken or whatever) to cook on his grill, he'll have it ready for us.  Also bring a dish to share and your table service. They will provide the drinks.
Besides eating and visiting with old friends, you can see the Buckel's old farm equipment, gold mine, spring and black smith shop.
We will meet at the Historical Society's Olde Community Church, 9906 Maine Avenue at 3 PM and share rides or caravan together.  For more information you may call Joan or Harry Buckel at 445-2238 or Betty McMillen 443-1133.
The more the merrier, so join us for some old fashion fun.  We'll be home by dark!

(Williams continued from page 1)

People come from all over the USA to do research, find their roots and learn about their family history. "Some folks from other historical societies say our archives are the best" Marcella stated.  The committee workshops are every Wednesday and Marcella wants more people to join in the fun, "They enjoy going through the scrapbooks" she said.
Marcella will turn 90 years old this August.  She moved to Lakeside in 1929.    She graduated from Grossmont High School in 1932.  Her Father was the Superintendent of the Lakeside School District.  She followed his path and worked in the offices at Lakeside Farms, Lakeview and Tierra Del Sol schools.
Marcella moved and lovingly restored the 1911 historic house she grew up in, it was designed by famous architect Irving Gill (it is now at the corner of Channel Rd and Julian Avenue).
Edna Kouns said that besides being a charter member of the Historical Society, Marcella was also President in 1980-81.  She also served on the committee to purchase the Olde Community Church from the Presbyterian Church.  "She has contributed in many ways; you can't find 'em like her any more!
