The Trolly Ride
Reflections of Regis Rosner

Living in one area for such a long time becomes very special to us old timers. I suppose I could consider myself an old timer after being in the area for over 50 years. There is definitely a change in our hearts after making so many friends and an occasional, God forbid, enemy. Over the years we seem to have developed a softer attitude for each other.
Considering the average family moves to a new location every 5 years, as per the last time I checked that stat, it would mean we could have moved ten times in a fifty year span. I dread the thought of moving all those dishes and appliances around again and again. Most of our appliances are so old they probably wouldn't survive that many moves no more than I would.
As soon as they installed the new Trolley line to East County I immediately took advantage of riding it to save on our monthly fuel bill and to leave the driving to them. I drove enough freeways to allow myself time to relax and finally get to enjoy the scenery. Very soon I began making friends on the trolley system, seeing many of the same passengers day after day, most heading for jury duty downtown.
One day a young lady hopped onto the trolley at the Lemon Grove Depot. She sat next to me and I began thinking how years ago the mothers of the girls west of El Cajon wouldn't allow their daughters to date us young fellers from Lakeside,  El Cajon or Alpine.
Since my curiosity got the best of me . . ."kinda like a cat," I mentioned to her that "years ago the Lemon Grove mothers would not allow their daughters to date us fellers from Lakeside." She immediately blurted out with, "that's right, and your still the same today!"
As soon as we could both stop laughing together I asked her, "Just what was the problem with us Lakeside boys anyhow?." She explained further, "Our mothers were afraid you Lakeside guys would take us to the Lakeside Hotel!"  My curiosity further got the best of me and I asked her "How did your mother know or hear about the Lakeside Hotel?"  She said, "that's a good question, I'll ask her the next time we talk." After that lively and funny exchange she reached her destination, getting off the trolley she looked back with a wry smile on her face.
I didn't see her again, but I did keep a look out for both her and her mother with an umbrella in her hand to give me a swat for old times sake.  I know you old timers in East County remember how it was?

Blessings
