Watkins Bake-Sweet Shop, a combination of bakery, fountain and candy store, was opened in August 1947 on Maine Avenue. Bob became famous for his Fruit Cake, which was shipped all over the country. His mail-order business was so great that he had to set up his own mailroom in back of the store. This was a favorite gathering place for the youth, as well as the adults of Lakeside. The bakery was closed in February of 1962.
